1996 Volvo 855-R
This wagon is the highly sought after R model. It has been a great daily driver, utility vehicle and occasional autocrosser for our family for the last three years. We purchased it used from Lexus of Lynnwood in January 2008, where it was traded in by the original owners, and in pretty rough shape. Since we purchased it back in 2008, we have literally poured thousands of dollars into it. Paint and body work, manual swap, upgraded suspension, and lots of work under the hood resulting in 287 hp and 304 ft/lb of torque to the front wheels. Here are the specifications:

1996 Volvo 850-R wagon 191k on the car, 2nd owners, original window sticker laminated list price 39,995. This wagon was sold new at Lynnwood Volvo, and resold used at Lynnwood Lexus, meaning its spent its whole life in Washington state, so no salt or corrosion issues to deal with.

Engine:
2.3 T5 whiteblock with ~100k on the motor, installed the motor with 179k on the chassis, did the build up at 186k, currently at 191k on the chassis. So ~ 111k on motor
New RSI forged piston rods along with new rod bearing installed 5 k miles ago
R manifold with a ported outlet
New 19t turbo 5k miles
Used OEM angle flanged turbine housing
3" mandrel bent downpipe, wrapped with DEI header wrap,
3" HKS sport cat from an Evo
3" cat back including a new Magnaflow resonator and a new polished stainless steel Magnaflow muffler
The cat system is setup using Evo 8 flanges, so you can used any cat or test pipe that fits an Evo.

Transmission
M56L manual transmission installed about a month ago, to replace a broken unit
Factory R clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing from European turbo model,~40k holds power just fine
New manual throttle cable, to replace the automatic transmission cable, a must do
Brass shifter bushings on the transmission,
Royal purple MTL
New drivers hub and axle 2 months ago
Custom built short shifter, top cut down, 3/8 " added to bottom, and a BMW shift lever drilled out, slide over the stock lever and welded on. This allows you to install any BMW shift knob from 1984 to the present so lots of options for shift knobs
This transmission is in great shape, much better than the unit it replaced. No issues with shifting or grinding it just goes along happily doing its thing. If you want a 850 turbo Volvo with a manual, plan on doing a swap or buying one that already been done, as Volvo never sold a manual T5 850 in the states. This swap was done correctly using all the factory parts and pieces, even the cruise control works! A minimum of $1200 was spent just in hard parts to complete this swap, but definitely worth the effort.

All trim and bumpers painted black to match the rest of the wagon, giving it a more modern look


All maintenance items were addressed at 186k, fresh timing belt, Ipd plug wires, NGK plugs, fuel filer, new stem seals in the head, injectors tested, new O rings in the oil pan, head gasket, radiator hose, turbo coolant hose. The entire pvc system was replaced at 168k when the head was rebuilt. Currently the wagon is running Royal Purple 10w-30.

The purchaser will receive all my Volvo extras including: injectors, tps, maf, spare broken tranny, a set of winter studless snow tires, cam timing tool, cam locking tool, bnib throw out bearing, used oil pump, extra o rings, gaskets, oil filters, plus tons of other misc bits and pieces. The purchaser also has the option of keeping the personalized "BATLWGN" plates if they so desire.

We are really sad to have to sell the wagon, but I just bought a diesel truck to tow the race car, and we are literally out of parking room once we get a trailer. We have a binder stuff full of all the receipts for the wagon over the last three years, along with original owners manual, and chiltons guide. There are lots of small upgrades, I'm surely forgetting
